I bought the computer a little over 2 years ago and the burner came with it.
I'm sorry but I really don't know very much about all this. I don't know what Firmware is or 9LO9. I also don't have any friends that could lend me an external burner. I live in the country where people drive pick-ups, drink beer and watch hockey - and I'm not one of them.

too bad. I live in the city and all my friends and I drive pick ups, drink beer and whiskey and watch LSU sports. How many burns has the drive done. These things do wear out. Have you changed Media lately(the dvd blanks) Firmware is the software for your writer so it can understand how to burn the blanks.

It's hard to say exactly what the problem is. You can tell most are confused. Installing multiple burning apps (especially suites) can cause problems, but Shrink on it's own should not cause this behavior.

Try running this little script and see if it helps:
    http://dougknox.com/xp/scripts_desc/xp_cd_dvd_fix.htm

Grab ImgBurn free) and choose 'Write image file to disc'

Now pop in a blank and choose your burner. You should see the details of the blank, do you?

I'm sorry guys, but I've tried all you have suggested and nothing will make the blank DVD show up when i put it in. When I've got some time I'm going to format the harddrive again and then install DVDfab. I don't know when I'll get around to doing that because I've got a lot of other stuff going on right now, but thanks for all your advice!

well when you do reformat and install Fab, don't install anything else. The use fab to rip and burn the DVD. That way if it works you'll at least know it's not your burner. Then add 1 program at a time and try a burn after each. That way you'll know what messing things up. When you get to shrink-redownload the file and install that one. I'm out of ideas!

In services, do you have IMAPI on or off?

Since I had no idea what imapi is, I found out. Mine is set to manual (not started)and this is how you can check.

    Disabling IMAPI

IMAPI is an application included with XP that allows you to drag and drop files onto a CD/DVD writer from Explorer and it will queue up the operation until you're ready to write the CD. Unfortunately, it can interfere with other writing programs like Nero or RecordNow, so it's best to disable it. You can tell if its running by looking in the Task Manager for a process called imapi.exe.

Turning of IMAPI.exe can solve 'Drive in use by another program' problem with Nero. To turn off IMAPI, start up your Control Panel. If you are in "Category View", change to "Classic View" (you'll see the button in the upper left of the screen). Click on "Administrative Tools", then "Services". Scroll down to "IMAPI CD_Burning COM Service", double click on it, check to see if you are on the General Tab, and then Scroll the "Startup Type" to "Disabled", click on "Apply" and you're all done.

you can't "open" a blank dvd in any operating system.. as stated earlier.. what is there to open? .. no filesystem.. nothing there. Until something is burned the disk isn't formatted.. and formatting a once only disk will kill it unless the data is at least written to one of the possible sessions.

Can I copy movies with DVDfab only? Don't I need to install Nero? In the past I would use DVDshrink, save the file to the main drive and then use Nero to burn the DVD. Will DVDfab do all this by itself?

yes you can burn the disc with the VSO engine included with Fab. Click on the little green check on upeer right of window and on the left panel select write to open a window where you set things for your burner and choose what program you want Fab to burn with VSO, NEROBRom or IMGBurn. Try setting it with the VSO and see if it tries to write the disc. Set the speed to half the rated medium. and burn the disc. If that does not work then install nero and set it to burn with Nero B Rom. One of those should work if the burner's good or the pc is not somehow corrupted. Have you reformatted and installed Fab????

NO dvdfab decrypter will only rip dvdfab platinum or gold however will transcode and burn in one step. you will need dvd shrink to transcode if you are using dvdfab decrypter (freeware)and nero or imgburn (imgburn is freeware and better than nero) to write the files. here is a guide to complete the process

    @ZOSO

    we are both correct in our on way. Fab free decrypter, it says on their site, you can do a main movie only;

    http://www.dvdfab.com/fab-compare.htm

And before, when I first used it a while back, I could have sworn you could also code a DVD to fit on a SL blank. I must confess I use the program very infrequently. But you can burn a movie only. ???

One problem with putting all those programs back on his pc at same time, might mask the problem he is having if it is a corrupted dvd program

I would recommend that he also redownload any program he installs. All their links being in earlier posts.

garmoom the only way he wouldn't need dvd shrink after ripping with dvdfab decrypter was if the file was at or smaller than 4.38 gigs

Well gentlemen, I'm back. I have just formatted my harddrive, cleaned everything off and restored my computer back to factory settings.
The first thing I did is put a blank DVD in the optical drive and right away I got a menu on the screen asking me:

    "Open writeable CD folder
    Burn a CD
    Add Files
Record, edit and create DVD Movies
    Take no action'

This is what I want to see, and I know the drive is working correctly. Now I'm going to install my programs one at a time and after each one I'm going to put the blank DVD in to see if I get this menu poping up. I'm going to install Office, Nero, DVDfab and DVDshrink. I'll keep you posted.

I stopped using Nero a long time ago and now use only dvd-decrypter, dvd-shrink and imgburn and never have any problems. Newer versions of Nero caused problems on my XP system.

I do have NTI installed because it came w/the laptop, but rarely use it.

You don't "need" Nero - ImgBurn is much better and free. Very reliable software.

    Good luck!

There is nothing wrong with Nero. It's a good program I have used Ultra Suite 6 and now 8 without any issues either time. XP OS both times. Like I mentioned earlier I would install newly downloaded versions rather than old downloaded versions for any that were downloaded but old install discs should be fine.

When installing Nero make sure you DO NOT install Incd. At least it use to screw things up.
