Dozens more can be found throughout the Nero Discussion forums, & many, as w/ the links above, were posted within the last 2 weeks. I've now spent endless night hours, troubleshooting in overtime, and trying to solve the same exact burn errors that these A.D. members describe in the above threads. In my Nero log, except for the file data/media listed that's set to be encoded/burned, my log's are identical and report the exact same CRAP! That is to say, the log file seems to be consistantly noting a [0x02 (0x01, SCSI_TASTATUS_CHKCOND) or 0x03 (KEY_MEDIUM_ERROR) or 0x00 (KEY_NO_SENSE) or 0x80 (0x05, SCSI_INVALID_CMD) or 0x04 (0x01, SCSI_ERR)]. WHAT THE HELL IS WITH THIS? I would luv for the experts to ponder the following: [bold] What if these burn errors that all of us are experiencing might involve an undetectable "rootkit" or otherwise similar form of DRM Extended Copy Protection(XPC)software, intentionally written for the purpose of concealing its presence and operation from the owner of the computer, while controling the function of a DVD burner, DVD Authoring software or both?[/bold] Is there any possibility something so sinister could be designed? I am no expert, that is why I ask the experts at AFTERDAWN to ignite the fire or put out my flames ***I also ask A.D. readers to comment on my theory. I am not convinced that hundred's if not thousands of users that once burned flawless CD/DVD's, either with cheap-ass media or quality, now suddenly experience write error after error using media that once worked, and this being all by chance. NO NO. And, it seems unlikely that in all these cases the Optical Writer itself happens to be "dying", coming to its life-end. That would be too much of a coincidence= the summer all the DVD burners began to die! I come to this conclusion only after rigorous troubleshooting, analysis and ameture reverse engineering. To be sure I'm making sense, here is a list of all the steps I've taken: ~testing same media in a different drive ~testing different brands of media ~using highest quality media (most expensive) ~using slower read/write speeds, ~reducing/increasing the IDE transfer mode, ~uninstalling other disc writing software (Sonic DLA, RecordNow, Nero InCD), ~Using zapper clean software for roxio & InCD removal tool ~striping my ASPI layer, then reinstalling fresh from Adaptec ~installing an older version of ASPI, forceASPI ~removing 3rd party upperfilters/lowerfilters from the registry, ~uninstalling the CDRW drive from the device manager then rebooting, ~completely removing the Nero Suite using Nero removal software ~using the the Nero Registry Clean & Driver Remover tool followed by a fresh installation of Nero, ~using Disk Manager to rename the drive letter, ~forcing an alternate driver to install thru device manager, ~using Windows Media Player to attempt to read or write to media ~upgrading latest HP firmware ~running a full virus scan I'm assuming that if you can think of it, I have tried it! I just can't get it to work. THAT's IT! I've mentioned my theroy. Please post your thoughts ^^^^^The rest of this post(i.e. all the crap below) is the technical stuff, timeline of events and specific errors as I have experienced them from the first burn to present day. Basically it's my experience with my DVD writer, the good, the bad and the fugly. If you don't want to you don't have to exhaust your vision reading the following if you're a member who has posted threads about sudden Nero/DVD Writer/Media burn errors, cuz it's the same shit different day. (Brief Background) My most desired christmas present from last year (that's Dec.'05), was a fabulous HP DVD Writer 740i(or b), that performs as a DVD±R/RW DL Recorder, CDR/RW Recorder & Lightscribe labeler. For 6 damn months, I flawlessly burned EVERY type of compatible media (CD-R, CD-RW, R/RW, & DVD±R DL)- all w/o any errors, whatsoever! Would then 'flip-n-burn' if it was a Lightscribe disc. Even before my very first burn, I had Nero Burning ROM software, ver 6, prior to installing the DVD Writer; once installed inside the PC, I upgraded the software to the Nero Burning ROM OEM Suite, using the CDRoM that came in the box with the DVD Writer. I remember the Install Wizard performed an UPGRADE, and the Serial number was embedded with the software; meaning the unique s/n was automatically inserted for me in the correct field when I came to that page in the wizard. I remember specifically that it was not the s/n in use for the currently installed Nero software. This was confirmed after the install because I noticed that the registry key 'HKLM\Software\Ahead\Nero Burning Rom\info' indicated two separate strings: Serial6 and Serial6_2. This seems to say that both s/n's are being applied, or whatever. In the first 6 months, I burned quality, crap, useful and useless compilations, of all types. Just for the practicality of learning and familiarity, I would create just about every type of variable DVD or CD compilation that Nero was capable of doing. Then I would burn it, w/o issue! From basic data DVD's in ISO9660 only, ISO+Joliette using highly unsupported ASCII char.set, to more complex data DVD's in UDF only, UDF/ISO bridge ver. 1.02, or ver. 1.50(physical & virtual), even UDF Virtual Partition ver. 2.00. I would then test the burned disc's for compatability in Windows Explorer, Media Player, and on stand alone DVD players (w/mp3,wma or wav DVD/CD's). I did this in order to delve into this complex world, and essentially learn what is just the tip of this "mt. Everest" size iceberg we call the world of CD/DVD authoring. (the errors begin) Then, all of a sudden, around the second week in July, that ever-loved HP DVD Writer began to error. FAIL! Not just once, but every time. Around the 3rd month of having the writer, I purchased a 5pk of Sony DVD-RW's for use with practice compilations. They worked fine. One or 2 of them I had blanked or erased probably several times. Two others I had written to only once and not erased. The remaining one was never written to. So in July, when the issue began, it turns out that the drive, the API, the ASPI layer or a combination of all 3 couldn't even detect any of these DVD-RW's that, prior to July, had worked fine. I cannot force erase any of them, Windows only indicates the drive as being empty as does Nero. THE DRIVE IS STUPID! I insert the disc, and no program can 'see' it. It's as if there is no disc inserted. The initial mounting process following insertion takes longer than normal, but essentially concludes that the drive is empty- when in fact, a disc is in the drive, the very same disc the drive burned to successfully only 2 months prior. Not to mention, the one still unwritten to from the 5 pack, is also undetectable. It gets worse. I had a 25 pack of HP Lightscribe DVD-R's & a 10 pack of HP Lightscribe CD-R's, purchase during the DVD Writer's 'working' period. Just the same, I had already successfully burned probably 6 full lenght DVD video disc's, with customized menus, and unique lightscribe labels. Also, I even used Nero BACKitUP, and dumped about 60GB or more of HD storage on to 10 or 11 HP lightscribe DVD-R and 'fliped-n-burned' a unique lightscribe label that listed every file name that I backed up in a tiny but perfectly readable font in a sprial from the very outside to the very inside of the label surface. This DVD writer does amazing stuff, I told myself. Afterall, I free'd up almost 70GB of HD space, all on a handful of data DVD's. Well, after the July mark, I went to burn a compilation, nothing complex, using the VERY SAME HP DVD-R's, and every time, I mean EVERYTIME, I GET A WRITE ERROR and A BURN FAILURE. USING BRAND NEW DISC's. DISC'S THAT WORKED FINE IN THE VERY SAME DRIVE BEFORE!! (in depth) I sometimes cannot get factory pressed CD/DVD's to be recognized. I am completely unable to get data recognition from DVD±R/RW media that had been burned using that same drive, prior to July. I am completely unable to perform a DVD±RW erase disc operation; either the drive doesn't recognize any media being loaded (blank or not) or the erase disc operation will fail. The erase process usually fails after 25% of the process has completed. Basically, when I insert DVD+R/RW media, the General Status LED continuously flashes on and off, sometimes remains permanently on, sometimes for several minutes before eventually failing to recognize the media, or the OS announcing a request time out for the operation. With DVD-R media, Nero Burning ROM always fails within 3% of the burning process with one of the error's mentioned in the above log files. ALWAYS A SCSI_SENSE_ERROR, (i.e ENDTRACK, FIXATION, NO SEEK COMPLETE errors). Media that once worked flawlessly, now never works at all. If I insert DVD±RW, not R, that has data written in a closed session from a previous burn, the drive/software behaves bad: During the "recognition time" after inserting the disc, the OS is very slow, and sometimes non-responsive to user operations/commands as it is attempting to mount the disc in the DVD writer. I can then find that WINDOWS EVENT VIEWER has suddenly become fludded with between 50-90 error log marks of only 2 specific error events:[bold] *Event Type: Error, Event ID:7, Event Source: Cdrom, Event Category: None, Description: The device \Device\CdRom0, has a bad block[/bold]; or [bold]* Event Type: Error, Event Source: Cdrom, Event Category: None, Event ID: 11, Description: The driver detected a controller error on \Device\CdRom0[/bold]. Either one or the other of these error events are listed over and over again, almost taking up 3/4 of the log file size itself. Furthermore, if I wait up to 10 minutes sometimes, the drive might finally recognize CD-RW media containing data, but never recognizes DVD±RW media. Never-ever. But, if there is a closed session writen on DVD±R media, it can only be seen using Nero CD Info, but no data can be seen or accesed through Windows Explorer. In fact, Windows Explorer shows the drive as being empty (no media). WHY CAN'T WINDOWS EXPLORER DISPLAY CONTENTS OF (non-movie) DVD disc's?? CONSIDER THE IMAPI ENGINE: If i insert a blanc CD-RW, then access the CD-ROM drive property menu, the first tab displays a pie graph indicating the USED and or FREE space on the current disc, and although the Windows Explorer Task Bar pane indicates 700 MB free space, the property tab shows the pie graph completely filled with blue, and stating TYPE: cd drive/ FILE SYSTEM: RAW/ USED SPACE: 0 bytes/ FREE SPACE: 0 byets/ CAPACITY: 0 bytes. This is inconsistant with the Windows Explorer information and the Nero Disc Info application. While Nero will show Session and track information, sometimes Nero can't even see the files that are saved on the media. As for IMAPI, the native Roxio CD burning software, using Windows Explorer to process an erase operation, the wizard fails everytime to erase the CDRW media. Windows Roxio (built in) IMAPI architecture never works. I cannot use Windows to write to or erase CDRW media. Nero Erase CD application is the only tool I've been able to successly blank a CD-RW disc with, and I mean only CD-RW. As mentioned earlier, not even NERO can erase any DVD±RW disc. Looking deeper into the media that will erase and be detected, get this: Once a CD-RW is FULL erased, I performed a test with the freshly erased media. With Nero, I burned a simple 200 MB file to the disc and nothing more. With a capacity of 700 MB, I left a majority of the disc unwritten. Nero successfully burned an ISO9660+joliet single closed session, via track-at-once format. The disc was ejected, then reinserted. Astonishing but surprising, Windows Explorer couldn't display the contents of that very disc. In fact, the drive appeared to get hung up, as it took more over 5 minutes to mount the disc. Again, the properties of the Cd drive, via windows explorer displayed [bold]TYPE: cd drive/ FILE SYSTEM: RAW/ USED SPACE: 0 bytes/ FREE SPACE: 0 byets/ CAPACITY: 0 bytes[/bold]. Windows cannot see, extract or open the media which I just successfully written using the very same drive. Additionally, with the disc still in the drive, I opened the Nero CD SPEED application, to perform a Disc Quality test. Practically every block was either damaged or unreadable. Nero had just written the data to that disc then couldn't even recognize the data it had written after. Again, the Event Viewer was fludded with both of the event ID's 7 & 11, as noted above. What does it mean when a drive cant recognize the data which it just burned to a CDRW? To expand on the writing process, I am lucky to ever successfully complete a burn. If I don't use Nero to full erase a CD-RW, Nero will fail to write to that CD-RW. It would be much simpler if you post your last failed Nero log, available here, Nero 6 history log location: Program Files>Ahead>Nero>NeroHistory.txt Nero 7 history log location: Program Files>Nero>Nero 7>Core>NeroHistory.tx there is so much we can pick up in these logs, posting snippets of the log is of little meaning without reading the FULL log.
Okay Gweny' I'll post it, but it may add up to tons of text *keep in mind, in each of these log postings, the media I used was brand new, out of package DVD media, no scratches or dust. Also be aware, even though these NERO logs are reporting the IDE/ATAPI transfer mode as "DMA OFF" on the secondary channel, it is wrong. Nero reports this incorrectly. This is something I inheritly check each time I sit down at my desktop PC. The Intel Application Accelerator controls the IDE transfer mode, and it always show both Secondary IDE channel devices (i.e. both CD drives) as using the mode UDMA-0. _______________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________ This was a write error (Key_medium_error) Windows XP 5.1 IA32 WinAspi: File 'Wnaspi32.dll': Ver=4.71 (0001), size=45056 bytes, created 8/14/2002 3:03:36 PM ahead WinASPI: File 'C:\Program Files\Ahead\Nero 6 OEM\nero\Wnaspi32.dll': Ver=2.0.1.74, size=164112 bytes, created 11/2/2004 1:54:32 PM NT-SPTI used Nero Version: 6.6.1.4 Internal Version: 6, 6, 1, 4d Recorder: <HP DVD Writer 740b> Version: FF24 - HA 1 TA 1 - 6.6.1.4 Adapter driver: <IDE> HA 1 Drive buffer : 2048kB Bus Type : default (0) -> ATAPI, detected: ? [bold]To start with, my user name is NOT gwenny[/bold] I can see from each log that no 2 things are the same, you are using different discs, different versions of Nero and different burn speeds. Heres how I see your logs. [bold]Log 1 [/bold] This version of Nero contains some bugs, uninstall, run this clean tool http://ww2.nero.com/nero6/en/Clean_Tools.html and then install this more stable version, BOTH packages http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/software/Nero6/Nero-6.6.0.18_no_yt.exe Package 2 http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/software/Nero6/NVE-3.1.0.21_no_yt.exe I do not recommend this, heres a removal tool IN CD 6 http://www.nero.com/nero6/enu/InCD_CleanTool.html [bold]Log 2[/bold] These are poor quality discs. Burning too fast, especially with these discs. [bold]Log 3[/bold] Here you are using a different version of Nero and once again burning too fast To summarize.. Run the clean tools, install Nero version recommended, use good quality discs and burn at 4X
