OK Pete, thanks for your advices. As far as I remember, checked "Enable burning with Nero" in DVD Shrink Preferences worked before - when I used 4,5 GB DVD media, so I meant this if I said, that it did not worked with DVD Shrink when I tried to burn TRAXDATA DVD DL media. I have Nero Burning Rom 6.6.0.3. I have the same problem with Toast 6.0.7 on my Powerbook, so I do not think, that this is matter of software. Thanks for any other advices. Juraj.

    xxpc210, welcome to aD,

DVD Decrypter is, IMO, the best ripper around - without a doubt, the best around for the money (Lol) it's FREE !

Use it rip a DVD in either the "File" MODE or in the "ISO" Read MODE.

Once you determine that the files are less then 4.36GB, whether because it's a DVD-5 disc OR after it has been compressed by DVD Shrink (Or any other app) you can burn it as an ISO image by using MODE, ISO, Write.

A handy application for FREE -

And, here it is - Download DVD Decrypter and rip a DVD with that. After backing up more than 800 DVD's, I haven't encountered a single instance where DVD Decrypter failed to do the job. :D)

    http://www.dvddecrypter.com/

Before you use it - I'd like you to check your DVD Decrypter's settings. First, it should be version 3.5.1.0. Go to "Tools", "Settings", set everything to "Default". Then in the "General" tab change, "Removal Method" from "Normal" to "Aggressive", in "File Mode", "tick" Remove IFO/BUP PUO's." For ripping in the "ISO, Read Mode", "tick" "Remove IFO/BUP PUO's" there also. in the "CSS" tab, under "CSS Cracking Method", choose "Brute Force ~> I/O Key Exchange" and "On Failure" choose "Yes". . IMPORTANT: In the "I / O" tab, in the bottom right, "tick" the box which says, "Ignore read errors". This is an excellent setting for dealing with lightly scratched discs which may cause ripping problems.

Under "Mode" we have a choice of either File or ISO Read to rip our DVD. The main page S/B self explanatory - Now, go rip our happy heart out - :)

Take it out for a "spin" around the block, Check under the hood, Kick the tires and climb inside and smell that "New DVD Decrypter" "smell". Go home, talk it over with the wife and, if you feel in the morning the way you do now, come back and I'll put you behind the wheel of a Brand new DVD Decrypter at a price so low, you'll think it was free. Huuummm, come to think about it, it is FREE - Well, What are you waiting for ?

Remember to stop back and tell me how you feel about it once you've put some "mileage" on it -

    Cheers,

Some people like ripping with DVD Decrypter using the "File" "Mode" and that's just fine BUT, especially for episodel-type DVD's, I feel that nothing can beat ripping the DVD using the "ISO", "Read" "Mode". When you're done ripping in the "ISO" Mode, [/i]open DVD Shrink go to File", "Open Disc Image " to locate your ISO image - after allowing DVD Shrink to load up the image, just process it as usual then burn to disc using your burner of choice.

HINT: If you are going to burn with DVD Decrypter, DON'T FORGET TO - go back to DVD Decrypter after ripping, to reset the "Mode" from "ISO - Read" to "ISO - Write".

Remember, before trying to backup a DVD on your own, find a guide and use it –

Here's one of mine – LQQk about ½ down the page, you'll see it there –

    Happy Holidays,

BTW I have got firmware 2.08 from Support Technique France - Contact : www.lacie.com/fr/support/request. Lacie is a name of external enclosure in which is NEC 3500 AG DVD RW DL burner implemented. I bought it 2 weeks ago. It was quite expensive (200 euros). I run the utility to flash the firmware, it crashed, so now I would like to thank all of you for your inputs, I quit, because the burner is gone.... Merry Christmas and do not believe to authorized support :((

    xxpc210,

    You just have to get a grip on yourself. Perhaps you think I owe you something . . . . . . . . Well, I don't ! ! !

You're not the only horse at the trough. When we post on these threads, this IS, after all, a public forum. You should realize that for everyone person we talk to there may be 10, 20 or even 50 pple who might read this thread now or in the future. They would like to know what we're talking about.

As a prime example of what I'm talking about some idiot wrote this -

It would seem to anyone reading this post that the dope who wrote, and I quote, "i'm not too familiar with it." didn't know Jack Sh@# about DVD Decrypter and probably didn't know about the advanced settings (which I'm extremely sure you did) or perhaps they didn't know about the "Write" settings (that you're so knowledgeable about). So I would appreciate it if you wouldn't get so "Uppity" about me trying to explain things to those who were, "not too familiar with it."

To the "Dip" who didn't know about DVD Decrypter, I hope I answered some of your questions. I'm sorry about the "know it all genius" who took offence to me explaining it to you. Sometimes we just have to tolerate that type of pple.

    Pete

    Hi JurajB,

I'm sorry to hear about you miss-hap "Flash". Flashing with the wrong Firmware can "Toast" a burner. Have you tried to "Flash" it again with the original OEM ? Sometimes pple have been able to "resurrect" their burner when it hasn't gone "round the bend".

We have counseled many pple in "flashing" their burners and since I've been here, going on 2 years, I've never seen anyone who followed our advice "toast" their burner. The only thing I can say to you a this point is - in the future, when you're ready to go again, stop back and we'll go through everything with you. It may take a little longer via this manner but we have a pretty good record of accomplishment and will be as careful with your equipment as we are with our own. That's the way I work and there are many more like me on aD.

Take care my friend and relax with friends and family over the up-coming holiday season.

    Season's Greetings JurajB , Be well ~

    Pete

JurajB - I know there were quite a lot of posts in this thread here but if you happened to read my first post I made a note about how NEC stressed not to update the firmware to 2.18 on external drives. I know you mentioned you had a laptop so you could not connect the drive internally and update the firmware and then replace the external housing. I'm sure this isn't any consolation to you and I do feel bad about your plight since you had many people giving you many different directions to go in. If it were up to me, I would have found a desktop to plug the drive in internally. There is no question that your media was sketchy at best and the main culprit. Unfortunately, this is a moot point. Good luck with your next burner purchase!

I know how to use both DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink I'm not a complete idiot but you seemed to state that most of the people in this forum use DVD Decrypter and I didn't know that and i was trying to get across the fact that I am more familiar with DVD Shrink than Decrypter So you know If you ease down considering you are probably the most common name used in all of AfterDawn and "Know It all" Just to inform you. Ya don't ok I may be a "newbie" but thats to this site and I am definitely not a newbie to DVD burning or Computers in general so don't call me an idiot and don't act like you know it all because you don't and I'm not even sayign that in a bad way noone knows all about computers

(Huuuummm, I thought we were done - :(

    Hey there xxpc210,

Well I guess you're right there xxpc210, there's nothing, anywhere, that could possibly make anyone think you were anything but the most knowledgeable person in forum when it comes to DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter. Of course you know all about them and how they work. Who would ever think to disagree with you on that.

But, If you really want a major laugh, check out the, " Brain surgeon," that went and posted this,

Now THAT guy should have known what you are, Ooohhh, so well aware of, that DVD Shrink couldn't possibly "burn" anything - It doesn't have a burner ! ! - isn't that a "HooT" ? Lol -

Now wouldn't you agree that only an unknowledgeable idiot would make a post such as that while trying to tell everyone within ear-shot how much he knew ? Yep, I thought you would agree - -

    Now that we agree -

    Peace -

    Here is what I think.
If you insult people here you will not get very far.
Whether or not you know a lot about computers is not the point.
I know a few bits & pieces about PCs, but I would not claim to be an expert. I have been on this forum for nearly a year & I have learned loads. I would also like to think I have contributed in some way too. That is the way it is here.
FYI, Scuba is one of the most learned people on this forum, if you do not respect people like him you will get nowhere.(In fact you should treat ALL people with respect, learned or not, this is a good trait in human nature). I am by no means a sycophant, but I do appreciate when someone is more knowledgeable than I am. (that would cover most of the population BTW!)
Our whole purpose on this forum is to try & help people like yourselves out. If you are just going to bitch you will hit a very large brick wall.
I do this in my free time, as does EVERYBODY here. The reason being is that we all enjoy helping. We also get pleasure from helping people. Especially when they are nice to us. Still, if you want to be a jackass, that is your perogative.
Someone once told me it takes a real man to admit his mistakes & apologise.
If you want to get respect I suggest you eat humble pie & apologise to everyone you insulted here.
This is one big happy community, we have lots of fun, just take a look in the safety valve section for rants etc.
Remember, nobody likes a smart arse.
I am sorry to go on about it, but I feel really strongly about this sort of topic. I really hate it when somebody is disrespectful to anyone. That can be said for life in general too. Afterdawn is a marvellous way to learn loads, teach others & have fun.
We are all here for the same purpose.
Anyway enough of that, I just wanted to say my piece & keep the happy afterdawn flag flying!

Listen up you jackass, what the hell is your problem with the world, when did I say I was smart? You are pissing me off now with your head up your ass attitude towards people. You need to take a look at the posts you made, you SHOULD see the error of your ways. Christ, what the hell does it take for you to be nice around here? Everyone here has answered questions, you just piss everyone off with the "I'm a newbie, I'm a newbie," don't blame me for your goddamn attitude.
You need to wake up & smell the coffee.
I now half expect this thread to be either closed or moved to the safety valve section by the mods.
    Who can blame them?
I am really annoyed with myself getting all het up. That does not happen very often.

    @ xxpc210

You need to lighten up, bud. I'm sorry if you can't handle someone disagreeing with you but if I see one one post from you that disrespects another member and/or uses foul language you're history.
