Believe it or not Nero is usually really good - I've used it for years!
For your son's homemade movies if your running them thru shrink to encode/compress use Recode in Nero. The same guy did both progs(shrink & recode). Recode is very similar to shrink.
If decrypter gives you an i/o error it usually means it doesn't like your blank disc. Might also be the reason nero asked for different media. So maybe the firmware would help but what brand are you using?

    Hi,
Many thanks for the tip regarding Nero update 6.6.1.4. I reverted to 6.6.0.18 and it worked. If anyone needs update 6.6.0.18 and cannot get it I will happily make it available to them.

That's really nice of you, but the links I posted are still working. BTW, you're welcome.

Don't worry, they do new updates every month or so and they're pretty good at eventually getting the bugs worked out. So, you'll get your new version, just have patience. Standard procedure with Nero is to keep the install for the last stable version when doing an update. This has happened before.

Interesting... I found that using anything over UDF 2.01 (which worked fine) (ie. 2.5 or 2.6) immediately generates the Cannot Connect TRF. Tried to write to DVD+RW. I tried increasing my VM to 768 min, but that didn't do anything. The machine has 256 RAM. This was Nero 6.0.1.4. My previous version, 6.0.0.15 I believe, didn't have any option for anything over UDF 2.01. Either way, I understand UDF 1.02 is really the most you need for a data DVD. So I guess there are various reasons for the error.

Most people have updated their software. As I mentioned, 6.6.0.18 is the most stable of the recent releases and the 6.6.1.4 has caused problems with the TRF issue among them.

Both, firmware and Nero are outdated. update nero here:

    ftp://ftp.us2.nero.com/Nero-6.6.0.18_no_yt.exe

    and firmware here:

    http://ftp.us.dell.com/rmsd/Gd30.zip

This may solve your media problem. With new updates you should be able to burn faster than X2. X4 would be optimal.

Also you don't have much memory, so don't multitask(if you were:)!).

Did you try the correct firmware? Before you try, disable the other drive in your PC, make sure there is no blank media in your drive and close any other applications.

You all are great! Thanks so much for the info. I immediately went to work on it and it worked like a charm! Aside from my DVD Shrink slowing down on me significantly for some odd reason over the past 2 months that I've been using it, things still get done. My pc is pretty old though with a lot of upgrades... new motherboard included.

Thanks again for all your brilliant minds!

6.6.1.4 created the problem. Reverting to 6.3.1.19 cured it after using the clean tool to get rid of all Nero programs...

Guess you didn't read the posts toward the top of the page. There's no need to revert all the way back to 6.3.1.19, but I guess it would work.

For what it's worth the only time I have ever seen that particular error was media related. One of my computers does not like ritek and every time I used nero and ritek I got the same error. May not help but going to tys on that computer the problem never happened again. And like you see going slower does make a difference. Also I use 6.6.0.18 after trying 6.6.1.4 and not liking it at all.

Don't know if you found a solution yet, but this worked for me. In DVD Shrink preferences, under File I/O tab, make sure "Enable burning with Nero" is unchecked.
