    no thats not what i ment..lol the 2.4DL are good disc by far but if they are switching over to the MII's(india) factory and that brand is gettting bad results, then they would be loseing money with the crappy media and people knowing this and not buying them cause of the fact...

    dont get me wrong VERBATIM DL disc are the best DL there is right now. id say (though i havent had any) the MII disc are still better than any other brand out there.. no questions asked....

    and if the 2.4dl are being burnt @ 8x.. wow thats way to fast i think.. once again i havent burnt enough DL disc to really say one way or another just hearsay from me...

    as a matter of fact let me run that scan on the 8x+r windata i just did.. brb witha scan

    @dutch44

    I don't have any Micro Centers in my area, will have to search the stores. ;D

    2 hub codes is one indicator of inverse stack process. I'm wondering if verbatim might be testing the process in the India plant, leaving the Singapore plant alone. The inverse stack process is significantly more cost effective, if you get it right. If verbatim can perfect it without people finding out, their profit margins will be huge if people continue to pay the same.

    @cincyrob,

    You've got to remember that this is 2.4x rated media, if the stuff still burns properly at 2.4x verbatim can say you are exceeding the recommended burn speed, even though some drives can burn upto 8x. I've checked my drives via ImgBurn and the max burn rate on any of them is 4x for MKM 001. Also vebatim has come out with 8x rated DLs which they are trying to sell.

    @cincyrob

    I get a better burn @ 6x with those RICOHJPN D01 067s, especially on my Samsung S203B, which likes them the best. I haven't been able to get as good a burn on my Lite-Ons, and my Lite-On 20A1S won't scan them past the layer break either. I am able to scan past the layer break with my LH-20A1H though.

    Here's a 8x RICOHJPN D01 067 +R DL burned with my Samsung S203B @ 6x, scanned @ 4x with Lite-on 20a1h:

    Scan

    PIFs & PIEs are elivated compared to verb dls but still acceptable.

    Here's a Memorex branded 8x +R CMC MAG M01 burned @ 8x with the Samsung, scanned @ 4x with the Samsung.

    Link

    Again, PIEs & PIFs are elevated compared to verbs & tys but still acceptable.

    OK, my Samsung SH-S203B burner arrived today. It won't burn dual layer discs AT ALL. I've gotten 3 coasters so far: Verbatim MIS (4x), Verbatim MII (4x), and Playo (2.4x). I used ImgBurn for all burns. Each one failed at exactly 50% and gave me an error message that said 'I/O error: Invalid address for write.' Here is a screen shot:

    http://i211.photobucket.com/albums/bb294/dutchdummy/DVD Scans/ioerror.jpg

    The drive is SATA on an ECS 848P-A motherboard with an updated BIOS. I've successfully burned DVD videos and CDs with this drive, so it seems to be exclusively a problem with the layer break. Is my drive broken? How can I tell, other than with these DL failures?

    dutch here's a good little read and very helpful I think. There's also a link down the page for a patched version of the f/w. I use it and so does hobbit. :) c0deKing was generous enough to provide the patched f/w and it seems to do just fine. ;D

    Have you tried playback? Is it clear, clean & rock-steady or is it pixelated?

    (We're getting way off-topic here, btw)

    If play-back is pixellated, it might be the way your controller is set up. Go into bios and see if you can set it to ide mode, which I think is required for the Samsung to operate correctly. You have the ICH5 SATA chip which is usually compatable.

    Here's one thread to read.

    Here's another good reference.

    Here's some more interesting reading regarding the 203B & sata controllers.

    BTW, if you try to flash and there is an issue with communication between the controller & the card, the flash will fail and most likely your 203b will be placed in "Safe Mode", i.e., unusable but recoverable. You won't be able to open the tray, it will be reported as a cd rom drive in Device Manager and the firmware revision will be reported as "BOOT".

    You're right, we are getting off thread, but thanks for taking the time to respond despite that. This will be my last post on this subject.

    My DVDs play fine in the drive with no pixellation, my SATA controller is set to IDE mode, and the drive works absolutely fine other than the fact that it completely craps out on burning DL discs on the second layer (ususally at 50%, but I did get one up to 63% before it too failed). The other threads you posted links to were indeed interesting, but didn't seem related to my problem. I'm just going to RMA the drive and see what happens.

    Nice burns/scans people. :) Been busy with the Parents and the kiddies. I've got a few to display but nothing exciting. :)

    Burner: LiteOn LH-18A1P @ 18X
    Scanner: same drive @8X
    MID: TDK 003
    Nero 4.7.5.0
    create disc

    scan

    Burner: LiteOn LH-18A1P @ 16X
    Scanner: same drive @ 8X
    MID: RITEK R03 (DVD+R 8X)
    Nero 4.7.5.0
    create disc

    stat

    scan

    Burner: Sony/NEC/Optiarc AD-7071S @ 8X
    Scanner: LiteOn LH-18A1P (stat & scan) Optiarc AD-7170S (trt)
    MID: CMC MAG E01 (DVD+R 8X) TDK branded
    IMGBURN 2.3.2.0
    trt

    stat

    scan

    I didn't check playback on the 16X and 18X burn cause they were give-a-ways. :) The CMC MAG E01 had some pixelation....oh that pisses me off!!

    I did another TDK 003 at 12X and we're watching it right now and it's PERFECT 1.5 hours into the movie. :D

    I couldn't believe the quality on the 18X burn, especially on a TDK 003. I may start burning them at 18X all the time. hehehe. NOT really.

    OK, my replacement drive arrived, and after going 0-for-6 with the first one sent me, I'm now 2-for-2, so it looks like it was the drive. I have a scan for a Verbatim DL Made in India disc burned on the Samsung SH-S203B (4x burn on 2.4x media), and it's a definite improvement:

    http://i211.photobucket.com/albums/bb294/dutchdummy/DVD Scans/VerbatimDL-MIITax.png

    At least in this case, the scan is similar to the ones I'd been getting with my Made in Singapore discs.

    By the way, I just want to say that the service from Mwave.com was outstanding. I placed my original order on Sunday Oct. 7th, got the delivery on Tuesday, sent it back on Wednesday, and got the replacement on Friday.

    dutch good to know that your replacement drive didn't cause you any serious problems. I know of one guy that went thru 3 LiteOn LH-18A1P's before he (we...community) figured that the f/w was wonky with certain DVD media.

    Also nice to know the mwave is a GOOD retailer. Always need somewhere to find better deals. lol.
