I'm having a problem with nero. All of a sudden, no updates or anything different with my computer, I'll get 18 seconds into a burn, and I'll get a burn failed message. When I scroll up to find out the problem, there's a power calibration error. I'm using the same brand of DVD-Rs I've always used. Any ideas on what the problem is or how to fix it? Thanks!

    Here's my log:

this is a really buggy version, have you considered going back to 6.6.0.18 which was the last stable version

you are attempting to burn to the very edge of the disc, try resetting the size to 4300meg as anything bigger is putting you in the area where the dye is the most uneven and where more coasters than anything is what you will get

as to your power calibration error:

A power calibration error is caused by the inability of a DVD-RW drive to use a DVD-R or DVD-RW disk.(also effects cd rom drives)

DVD-R and DVD-RW disks themselves have information written on them, within this Media ID code there is information that the drive uses to calibrate itself to the disk, when a drive first starts to write to a disk it will burn a small amount of data to a calibration area on the disc, using the calibration information in the Media ID code, and then try to read back the data that it has written. If it cannot be read, then disk will be ejected and fail with a power calibration error.

A power calibration error is normally caused by problems with the media. Should you be experiencing problems with your drive or the media, we recommend that a disk from a good quality manufacturer be used to test it.

so is there a possibility that you have a faulty batch of discs

    this is a laptop right

Power Calibration is controlled by the recorder.

Before any write operation, all recorders must do a 15 step power test to determine the optimum power for writing to the CD; this is called "Optimum Power Calibration"(OPC). During the write, it continues to do this test to get the best write throughout the whole CD; this is called "Running Optimum Power Calibration" (ROPC).
This whole process is controlled by the recorder, though initiated by programs such as Nero. There is an area on the inner part of the CD for the test and test data info to be stored. You can use this area up to 999 times.

If you receive the "Power calibration error" or "Power calibration area is (amost) full" error message, the cause will be either poor media, poor power, or a defective recorder.

It is a laptop. If 6.6.0.18 is the best version to use, then I'll go back to it.

Also, I tried to burn one of the same discs in another computer using Nero, and it's working just fine. What could this mean for my drive?

    Your Nero log,

Which kind of media is it, and what brand. I do not think your recorder is recognizing the media.

I'm using Memorex DVD+R 16x. I've used these since I got the software, and I've never had a problem before now.

My drive won't recognize blank Sony or Maxwell discs. I've tried them before, and when I'm using them with nero, it spits it out and tells me to put a disc in. But I have used Verbatim before. I'll try getting some of them. But if it's a problem with the memorex discs, why would it not like it in my computer, but burn just fine in my dad's?

Does your dads computer have Roxio installed. Your father is probably using a different burner to you as well, have you implemented ANY changes that the forum have recommended as yet?

Possibly because the last known firmware on this burner is almost two years old, and there is no known updates for this burner.

    http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1883

The drive is having a hard time recognizing media,t hat is why it will burn in your Dad's and not yours, his is probably more up to date than yours. Yes try some Verbatim it may recognize them, NEC burners like Verbatim.

No, his computer doesn't have Roxio. I've installed the older version of Nero and uninstalled Roxio, but it didn't help with the memorex discs I have or the maxwell discs my dad has. I haven't had a chance to get any verbatim discs yet, but I might run out and pick some up tonight.

Okay, I got the Verbatim discs, and it still has the same problem. Is it possible it's a +/- issue? I don't think the drive is completely shot because it'll burn a cd.

The drive will only burn +R media, I still think the fw in the burner is too old to recognize newer media, if you have some old stuff or can get a hold of older 4x media try that out.
