    Hi.

The first thing we want to do is to edit out your Nero serial numbers from your post. To do that click on the paper/pencil icon in the immediate upper right of your post to enter edit mode. Delete the numbers and OK the changes.

I think this is an IO Magic burner and there is newer firmware, version G7Z9, at the link below. Scroll to the bottom of the page and verify the picture shown to the front of your burner. If they match, update the firmware to your burner.

    http://www.iomagic.com/Firmware/FirmwareDownload.html

There's a link to instructions for doing so in the firmware table in the far right column.

For some reason this drive has slipped out of DMA transfer mode. Use Device Manager to reset the drive. See the link below for help.

    http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/260038

You're attempting to burn all the way to the outer edge of your disk which may cause problems down the road for playback as disks can be more unreliable at their outer edges. I suggest setting the target output size to 4400mb in whatever authoring software you're using. In Nero Recode and DVD Shrink, the target size is set to Custom and then the size entered. Post back if you need additional help doing this.

Your burner isn't able to identify the media you are using. Updating the firmware may solve this problem or it may not. We won't know until you update the burner firmware. Also be sure to use good quality media like Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden, and Made in Japan labeled disks especially those from Sony and Fuji.

Sometimes it's better to burn slower than faster. A good rule of thumb is to limit burn speed to half or less the rated speed of the media. If the disks you're using are 16X rated, 8X might be OK in this case. If your disks are of lower quality, 8X may be too fast to get a good burn. Also not all systems are capable of burning at the speeds displayed. One can choose 8X as the write speed and really only achieve 4X. If that's the case, choosing 4X at the start would be better and reduce the chances of a bad burn.

This is a Roxio driver and can cause problems with burning in some configurations. I don't think it's a problem here but if you continue to experience problems, you should consider uninstalling any Roxio software and then running the Roxio Zapper to remove the driver:

    http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Uninstallers/Roxio-Zap.shtml
    http://kb.roxio.com/content/kb/EE6000061

I should note that you may not have any Roxio software actually installed. Other software sometimes installs this driver, especially some of the music download services.

    laddyboy,

I want to really say thank you and I appreciate the help that you provided me in solving this problem. The problem was in the firmware for the I/O Magic Drive. Once I flashed the drive and rebooted the problem was solved. Now I am back to burning my movies.

    Hello again.

The burn failed at the end. Although 8X was the burn speed attempted, it's obvious from the timestamps that you were actually getting a 4X burn. Might as well slow the speed to 4X.

The actual manufacturer of the disk was not identified by your burner's firmware. This is always troublesome. It's likely either your burner firmware does not have the media you're using in its firmware table and is resorting to a default write strategy or you're using some poor quality media for which no write stratey is available. Do you know the brand of media you're using. Download DVD Identifier from the link below and report back the manufacturer ID for the disks you're using.

You need to reset the target output size and not burn so close to the outer edge of your disk.

If you're using DVD Shrink: Edit > Preferences > Preferences tab
In the Target DVD Size menu select Custom and enter 4400 in the mb box.

In Nero Recode, in the Fit to Target menu in the lower right corner, select Custom... and enter 4400 in the MB size box.

You might also try creating an image file from your authoring software/DVD Shrink/Nero Recode and burn that with ImgBurn (free).

    Thanks once again....)
The media I am using is TDK 8X DVD+R Disks. I also have 16x DVD+R Disks from Fuji but whenever I put them in I always encounter a problem with setting the right burning speed. Im some what of a newbie. Besides, for a long time 8x worked fine until now. Is there a way that I can get my burner to identify the firmware and media through dome sort of tweaking or setting? I did as you said and reset the target output to 4400mb. How ever the movie I was burning when I got the error msg was less than 4400mb. It was like 3785 or something. You were correct that the error occured toward the end of the burning process. After following your instructions today...I tried to burn another movie and DVD SHRINK gave me this error msg while it was encoding:
" DVD Shrink encountered an and cannot continue. Failed to read file "D:\" Data error (Cyclic Redundancy Check)......I dont know why I got that. Maybe I/O magic dvd burners are not so good and maybe I should buy a new dvd burner. What do you think? SHould I buy a new burner? If so which would you reccommend? Once again I cant thank you enough for the help you have provided me....THANKS!!!!!

The DVD Shrink error could either be a read failure because (1) the DVD reader is not so good, (2) the disk is defective or dirty, or (3) the disk has structural copy protection your software is not able to overcome.

If it's #1, there is little you can do except try a different DVD reader. For #2, clean the disk or get another copy that isn't defective.

For #3 to overcome structural copy protection, there are three basic approaches.

    - Use AnyDVD (not free but free 21-day trial) along with DVD Decrypter to rip, DVD Shrink/Nero Recode to reauthor/compress and Imgburn/DVD Decrypter to burn.

    - Use DVD Fab Decrypter (free) to rip, FixVTS/Vobblanker to clean the files, DVD Shrink/Nero Recode to reauthor/compress and Imgburn/DVD Decrypter to burn.

    - Use Ripit4me (free) which combines several free programs to automate the backup process, particularly if you use the 1-Click mode.

Neither TDK nor Fuji media is very good unless it's labeled Made in Japan. Even then, the TDK media is only so-so. Most of us around here recommend Verbatim because it is usually easy to find in the brick and mortars as well as online. Media made by Taiyo Yuden is considered the best available but is usually only acquired online. Taiyo Yuden does make disks for other companies as well, specifically Sony and Fuji. That is why Fuji and Sony Made in Japan is recommended (because it will in almost all case be made by Taiyo Tuden).

Since you have the Nero suite of programs, use the Nero InfoTool to identify your disks' manufacturers. Just place a disk in the burner and start Nero InfoTool. The manufacturer info will be on the Disk tab when InfoTool finishes its analysis.

    Laddy boy,

I took your advice and ordered a 100 spindle DVD+R from Taiyo Tuden. NOw I am thinking about buying a whole new dvd burner. Could you reccomend a burner to me? I was thinking about the Plextor PX-760A but i read somewhere that it is not compatible nor upgradable with vista and I plan on upgrading my pc soon. So is there a good burner out there that will be compatible with vista? In the mean time I will keep trying to solve the problem with my current drive. Oh, by the way the medias that I have are built in Taiwan. Thx again for all you help!

Sorry but I don't know what drives will for sure be compatible with Vista. I would think all of them should be. In the past I would have recommended BenQ and NEC, but BenQ has been bought out and NEC is using a different supplier for it's burner. Plextor, Liteon, and Pioneer would be good choices. I'd probably lean toward Liteon because they seem to update their firmware and do not intentially cripple their drives. Burner reviews can be found at:

The Plextor 760A is a very good burner. I'm not sure why it wouldn't be compatible with Vista.

    Laddyboy,

I decided to buy the Lite-On LH-18A1P-186 from NewEgg. I was going back and forth between this model and the Plextor PX-760A. The clincher was that Nero 7 comes with the Lite-On. Plus the price was awesome. So now I just have to sit back and wait for the UPS man to deliver my new burner and my Taiyo Yuden DVD+R Media. What do you think about Nero 7 in regards to burning with DVD Shrink? Does it have the same problem with DVD SHRINK as Version 6.6.1.4 or should I just use the current version of Nero? Also, with this new burner, can I burn with 16x and 8x DVD+R Media? Is the speed something I need to set manually based on the write speed of the media or will the burner automatically adjust itself to the speed of the media? I want to once again thank you tremendously for all the help and advice you have provided me.

Nero 7 works fine with DVD Shrink as long as you use a version of Nero that isn't buggy. Newest is 7.7.5.1 available here:

    http://www.nero.com/nero7/enu/nero7-up.php

The version before 7.5.9.0a worked pretty good. I don't know about this one. I haven't heard too many complaints yet. Prior versions of Nero can be found at http://www.filehippo.com. Other decent versions are 6.6.0.18 and 7.0.8.2.

You may not be getting the full version of Nero with your burner. It may be a somewhat limited OEM version. I seldom use Nero for burning. I use ImgBurn primarily. I also don't autoburn with DVD Shrink. I prefer to output an ISO image file and burn that with ImgBurn.

As for burning speed, burning at max speed isn't a good idea in my opinion. I think the probability of getting a bad burn increase with burn speed. I prefer to burn at half or less the rated speed of the media. Also not all systems are capable of getting these fantastic burn speeds as advertised. You'll have to experiment a bit to find the combination of burn speed and media that does the best for you. You can use the Nero CD-DVD Speed Tool to assess your burn quality.
