    Hello Everyone,

I have been reading these threads for weeks trying to figure all of this stuff out on my own. I understand some, but the jargon is still quite confusing. Alas, at the risk of being accused of not doing research, I am here hoping someone can help me move through this frustration. I am not so tech savvy, but I have managed to download and install several programs over the past two months after following some guides here.

I have DVD Fab, DVD Shrink, Decrypter, Imoburn (sp), Nero 7 just to name a few. I have to also say, that it has taken me a while to figure out exactly what each program does. I have been very successful in getting my DVDs onto my computer using DVDFab. The problem is in getting them off in working order.

I have changes settings.. increase / decreased burn speed, changed media.. tried two different standalone players.. and even looked for firmware as have been suggested in these forums, but yet I am getting coasters. Some of the DVDs will play on my computer.. but skip terribly in my DVD players.

I have an LG HL DT ST GSA-H42L Drive that I have had for about a year. I have looked for firmware without any luck. My DVD players or JVC XV-N60 and Phillips DVP 3040. I am destroying both Phillips 1-16x DVD-R and newly purchased Verbatim DVD-R 16x, which I learned about from reading the forums. I have burned at 16, 8, and 4. I get the same results. I am litterally typing this with a bunch of coasters all about me.

I am utterly frustrated as I have been for weeks at this. I have about 10/50 Phillips left and about 43/50 Verbatim as I just bought these yesterday. In all of this, I have exactly ONE DVD that works without skipping.

    Please help!

    Thank you!

just wondering are you trying to do a disk to disk copy or trying to just burn downloaded files to disk?

    Thanks,

I have the backup files on my computer. I am now trying to burn the files. Today, I realized that I should just try to burn the files directly from the folder using only Nero. It burned in 5 minutes and I was left here lamenting the many weeks I have spent trying to get this right and all I had to do is use Nero directly. Well that worked for one DVD. All of the others (files) are too big. On all occasions I selected all of the files in the Video folder copied and pasted them into Nero and just "burned" them. I had a perfect copy of one movie.

What I have been doing before then was:

Using DVD Fab to files on hard drive. Some are reauthored some are full backups. Then from there open DVD Shrink and use it to copy files onto discs. As you know, it gives the option to use ImgBurn or Nero. I have tried both. Also as some of you may know, this is also taking many hours each disc. In many cases just to have one that does not work.

I was able to find and update my firmware last night and that has significantly cut down on the coasters. I have had about 3. The think now is that everything takes so darn long with tha Analysing and Encoding each disc everytime.

I am going to mess around with these programs and see if I can shrink the files that are larger than 4.7 and then just do what I did with the one movie that copied well today. I mean, I simply have about 25 movies on my portable hd that I want to put on discs. I am sure there is a much simpler way to all of this.

yeah the easier way is to use clonedvd + anydvd but its only a 21 day free trial then you have to buy it. a couple things nero 8 has playback issue autoburning with dvd shrink so stick with imgburn. use the Verbatim burning at 8x max or try Taiyo yuden also make sure you are burning on a clean machine (doing a disc cleanup and defragging often? at least once a week)without other programs running while burning. your PC specs would help also? would it happen to be a laptop?

make sure the drive/burner is in DMA mode and not in PIO mode that will cause major slow down. BTW how old is the drive/burner? may be time for a new one.here is a guide to fix the DMA issue if you have one

    Hello again,

The drive is in DMA mode. I think I have had this drive for a year and a half or so. I am using an ABS desktop with Windows XP Service Pack 3, 2GB Ram, AMD 2600+ @ 2.08 GH. I have not done a defragment in a a few months, but everytime I do one I get a message that the drive does not need one. I will do another one as well as check out the other recommended software and all of the other suggestions here.

One odd thing in checking the drive today, I see that for driver information it says Driver Date: 7/1/2001, which is what is said prior to my updating the driver yesterday. Then under the details tab there is a long series of numbers and I see SL01, which is the firmware I updated. I got it from here: http://www.techspot.com/drivers/driver/file/information/8943/. I thought this would update the driver. Does this mean that I am still missing the correct driver for this device?

    Thanks

Seeing as you have Nero use Recode instead of Shrink. for me it's faster.
